Hate Crimes Press Release -- The vital role played by We Are All Brooklyn was put to the test in October 2006 when a horrific hate crime against a Pakistani man perpetrated by Jewish teenagers in Midwood threatened to unravel the community. We Are All Brooklyn saw the potential for this explosive situation to be inflamed by the media and further tear at the fabric of the community. Our consistent message confirmed that this event was an anomaly in the community. As in the past, we put out a statement from roughly 50 organizations condemning this alleged hate crime. We organized press conferences to form a common message of condemnation that stressed the importance of moving forward. The actions of We Are All Brooklyn allowed the community to avoid further confrontations and escalation of tensions between these two communities. Our press release allowed for community leaders representing the full diversity of Brooklyn to make a collective statement that this kind of crime is not to be tolerated. |
